This has often made me wonder if civilization necessarily requires repressive class systems; an egalitarian society would stay stuck at the tribal stage like in that movie Ferngully because there's no room for meaningful economic growth. Advancement REQUIRES a serf class. This is why every civilization in history until extremely recently was a utter hellhole for the vast majority of the population.
