We were doing a drill where the opponent was stuck in your closed guard, and either you escape from the bottom position, or get a submission. The opponent on the other hand was to throw punches at us and also try to get a submission/escape the guard. Rounds will be reset upon submission or escape from closed guard.
What this looks like
So at the start of the drill/sparring session I was put with a fella who was about 75kg (he claims 90, but it's total shit, he is 75kg) I weigh 57kg for reference. The first time I got punched that session, it stung me. I have been punched before previously and felt like I got stunned the first time and my breathing felt disrupted. But this time, I felt nothing from the punches, at times forgetting I was being punched. I went to grab his wrist and swept him, coming up to mount.
From there I was having a tough time advancing, the meta of MMA is different to BJJ. In BJJ someone on the bottom would be focused on escaping and getting into a better position. I expected my opponent to do something like that, but he did not. Instead he held my head down so it was hard for me to get up. I wasn't in pain or anything, the position was just uncomfortable, but I was safe from any submission attempts. It felt like a lot of stalling for me, so I jumped to side control and attempted a von flue choke (since his guillotine choke was wrong, and I was on the correct side to counter it). But as I went for the von flue I lost position and was back to square one in closed guard.
I got punched in the face a few more times, but at that point, I just escaped the bad position and got back to standing - so the round reset. After about 4 minutes of us going at each other, I did not get a submission, neither did he. It was just him throwing punches, me sweeping him and getting on top but having a hard time advancing because he would stall (now that I think of it, I should have just let him stall because he'd get tired anyways. But I don't like stalling and shit during training since it wastes time). I do think I would have beaten him if I had longer round and the ruleset allowed standup grappling.
Next guy was closer to my size, but still outweighed me by 10kg. So I start from closed guard again, and I manage to pendulum sweep him
He was a bit shocked he got swept so fast (I was a new face at this gym, so he assumed I had no training). I was in the mount position and this time just held the position, and put all my bodyweight on his diaphragm - making his life a living hell and harder for him to breath so gassing him out a bit quicker. He was squirming and did try to hold me down and stall again, which I just accepted and didn't bother changing this time around. After stalling for a minute, I advance and try to go for a mounted triangle, but lost position. I quickly got back onto my feet though, so my partner had to start on the bottom of closed guard.
I break his closed guard this time and quickly use an double-under pass to get to side control.
From there I climbed to mount again quickly and pinned my opponent's arm down - he thought I was going for an americana so foolishly extended his arm to prevent it from being bent. I put my shin on his arm and quickly wrapped up a triangle choke. My opponent wasn't tapping, so I pulled his head down and got the tap.
Overall my BJJ was VERY useful in MMA and I was able to sweep and submit the MMA guys. But BJJ isn't perfect, dealing with strikes made fighting from closed guard a lot harder, I took a lot of damage and punches while I was on the bottom. I didn't throw a single punch during the entire time, and think that if I had thrown more punches a lot of my stalling issues would have been solved. Strikes made BJJ simple, in BJJ if I am stuck in someone's closed guard, I have to think of multiple ways to get out and escape and risk being swept. But in MMA, simply punching someone in the face made closed guard a not so safe place and a far more dynamic position than what it is normally. I think if I learnt better ground and pound techniques, I would have very easily beaten the people in the class. My jiu-jitsu was more advanced as well as my takedown game, but strikes had made things harder - still not impossible. I would be subbing guys like this in like 3 minutes in a BJJ class, but it took me 5 minutes and sometimes like 6 minutes.
I did some rounds with my cousin and younger bro too, but they are pretty shit. I was subbing them within 2 minutes, and even subbed them in 30 seconds jfl. I shoulder threw my brother a bit too hard and his body now aches jfl.
Was enjoyable session, ended up training for like 2 hours today. When I get a car, I will be making my full transition to MMA. But for now BJJ and Judo are my main focuses.
