We were doing a drill where the opponent was stuck in your closed guard, and either you escape from the bottom position, or get a submission. The opponent on the other hand was to throw punches at us and also try to get a submission/escape the guard. Rounds will be reset upon submission or escape from closed guard.

What this looks like

1661468038358

So at the start of the drill/sparring session I was put with a fella who was about 75kg (he claims 90, but it's total shit, he is 75kg) I weigh 57kg for reference. The first time I got punched that session, it stung me. I have been punched before previously and felt like I got stunned the first time and my breathing felt disrupted. But this time, I felt nothing from the punches, at times forgetting I was being punched. I went to grab his wrist and swept him, coming up to mount.

From there I was having a tough time advancing, the meta of MMA is different to BJJ. In BJJ someone on the bottom would be focused on escaping and getting into a better position. I expected my opponent to do something like that, but he did not. Instead he held my head down so it was hard for me to get up. I wasn't in pain or anything, the position was just uncomfortable, but I was safe from any submission attempts. It felt like a lot of stalling for me, so I jumped to side control and attempted a von flue choke (since his guillotine choke was wrong, and I was on the correct side to counter it). But as I went for the von flue I lost position and was back to square one in closed guard.

I got punched in the face a few more times, but at that point, I just escaped the bad position and got back to standing - so the round reset. After about 4 minutes of us going at each other, I did not get a submission, neither did he. It was just him throwing punches, me sweeping him and getting on top but having a hard time advancing because he would stall (now that I think of it, I should have just let him stall because he'd get tired anyways. But I don't like stalling and shit during training since it wastes time). I do think I would have beaten him if I had longer round and the ruleset allowed standup grappling.

Next guy was closer to my size, but still outweighed me by 10kg. So I start from closed guard again, and I manage to pendulum sweep him
Pen sweep

He was a bit shocked he got swept so fast (I was a new face at this gym, so he assumed I had no training). I was in the mount position and this time just held the position, and put all my bodyweight on his diaphragm - making his life a living hell and harder for him to breath so gassing him out a bit quicker. He was squirming and did try to hold me down and stall again, which I just accepted and didn't bother changing this time around. After stalling for a minute, I advance and try to go for a mounted triangle, but lost position. I quickly got back onto my feet though, so my partner had to start on the bottom of closed guard.

I break his closed guard this time and quickly use an double-under pass to get to side control.
Double Under Pass from Guard27083546

From there I climbed to mount again quickly and pinned my opponent's arm down - he thought I was going for an americana so foolishly extended his arm to prevent it from being bent. I put my shin on his arm and quickly wrapped up a triangle choke. My opponent wasn't tapping, so I pulled his head down and got the tap.

Overall my BJJ was VERY useful in MMA and I was able to sweep and submit the MMA guys. But BJJ isn't perfect, dealing with strikes made fighting from closed guard a lot harder, I took a lot of damage and punches while I was on the bottom. I didn't throw a single punch during the entire time, and think that if I had thrown more punches a lot of my stalling issues would have been solved. Strikes made BJJ simple, in BJJ if I am stuck in someone's closed guard, I have to think of multiple ways to get out and escape and risk being swept. But in MMA, simply punching someone in the face made closed guard a not so safe place and a far more dynamic position than what it is normally. I think if I learnt better ground and pound techniques, I would have very easily beaten the people in the class. My jiu-jitsu was more advanced as well as my takedown game, but strikes had made things harder - still not impossible. I would be subbing guys like this in like 3 minutes in a BJJ class, but it took me 5 minutes and sometimes like 6 minutes.

I did some rounds with my cousin and younger bro too, but they are pretty shit. I was subbing them within 2 minutes, and even subbed them in 30 seconds jfl. I shoulder threw my brother a bit too hard and his body now aches jfl.
Drop seoi

Was enjoyable session, ended up training for like 2 hours today. When I get a car, I will be making my full transition to MMA. But for now BJJ and Judo are my main focuses.

Which is better for street fighting? Judo or MMA? I’ve tried BJJ for a little for a year and quit because I hated it a lot. But in retrospect I should’ve stick with it because knowing you can physically dominate people gices you confidence

MMA is best for street fights. Judo is very good and cheap, but takes a while to master - since throws are quite high risk but they can be fight ending lol. You should deffo stick to a martial art bro, within a year or two, you will wipe the floor with most people

56kg and yet could kill 100kg guys due to your skills. Niggas running around the UK like little Robin from the Batman cartoons knocking 7 foot tall fuckers out lol

pm face pics op?

People grossly overestimate the power of BJJ in the cage if you don't have top position. It is extremely difficult to submit someone off your back when they can punch you in the face. This is why these Russian sambo guys do better as even though their submission game is not as strong as people from a BJJ background, they can take you down and keep top position easy due to their combined expertise in Judo and freestyle wrestling. From there, they have a better chance of submitting their opponent than some BJJ guy on his back, and even if they cant get the submission, they can lay and pray to bank a decision.

Nice got into a fight with a BJJ student too at my MMA gym but he isn't good so i went to a faint hook but went for a straight shot and was stunned and took 2 big hook's to finish him off.

My Boxing training is paying off but still want to do Wrestling and BJJ to complete my pyramid

The only reason im still going to boxing lessons and sparring gyms is because its fun to knock out people and also dodge + footwork

Tried Wrestling and im good at that too but the feeling of just impacting someones head with your fist feels satisfying

I love wrestling, yesterday I shot the most powerful blast double I shot in a while. Dude went flying, do you know ground and pound strategies?

yes i know one

When you go for a double leg takedown and it's sucessful your alway's going to be on top mount whatever you do,this will alway's mean his back is not exposed and vulnerable so he will be punching you and elbowing you from down on the ground so to stop this you keep your dominant forearm over his head/eye area so he can't see where he's punching and also to lean on his dominant side so he can not do any critical damage against you.

In this position just use your non dominant hand to hook and elbow repeatedly

I used this once and it worked but the flaw is that your prone to Trianlge choke's and lethal elbow's if the person is strong and get's you off him which is what happened to me the first time i've used this straghtey.

Triangles are hard to get out of, but you need to posture up and keep your head up and try to standup ASAP. When I go for a double, if mount isn't available, just go side control and get a scarfhold/kesa gatame pin and throw punches jfl. Ground and pound simplifies jiujitsu a lot too, but it's still good to train.

I like playing off my back a lot because I can get sweeps and submissions on MMA guys.
