  • Patient: A 16-year-old with Down syndrome, previously assessed to have the mental capacity of a 4-year-old, spending much of his time playing with blocks rather than engaging in everyday life.
  • Intervention: Dr. Price fitted him with a palatal expansion rod in his upper jaw, widening the narrow palate. Over a period of six months, this stimulated not just facial growth but systemic development too.
Outcomes were dramatic:

  • Cognitive & Functional Gains: The teen began reading — both children’s books and newspaper headlines. He could accurately handle money at the grocery store and successfully navigate public transit.

  • Physical and Hormonal Maturation: He experienced a 3-inch growth spurt in four months and developed facial hair and mature genitalia — attributed to stimulation of the pituitary gland via expansion of the sella turcica (a bone cavity housing the pituitary gland)

  • Respiratory Improvements: His severe sleep apnea was resolved when the expander opened his obstructed left nostril, allowing proper breathing.

So to this point, the spurt was largely a by product of palatal expansion, per the mechanism explained in the latter part ("sella turcica")? Any more details on this, on the particular mechanism?

The sella turcica is the gap in the sphenoid bone that holds the pituitary gland in place
when the palate expanded, the sella turcica gap increased, which then stimulated the pituitary gland.
