Sprinting:

100m, Usain Bolt, 23.0 years
200m, Usain Bolt, 23.0
400m, Wayde van Niekerk, 24.1

Long Distance:

800m, David Rudisha, 23.7
1500m, Hicham El Guerrouj, 23.8

Super Long Distance:

5000m, Joshua Kiprui Cheptegei, 23.9
Marathon, Eliud Kipchoge, 33.8

Jumping:

High Jump, Javier Sotomayor, 25.8
Long Jump, Mike Powell, 27.8

Throwing:

Javelin, Jan Železný, 29.9
Shot Put, Ryan Crouser, 28.5

Discussion: sprinting and long distance are dominated by athletes at 23 & 24, which suggests that the events which are very demanding on fast twitch muscle fibres require youth. However, jumping is also very explosive where records are held by 26 - 28 year olds. The marathon world record is suprisingly held by a 34 year old which suggests that cardiovascular fitness can peak later in life. Throwing events are held by athletes in their late twenties which suggests that upper body strength can peak later than the running events.

TL;DR the take away from this for me is that men may peak physically as early as 23 so don't waste it.

Many Mr. Olympia winners are in their late 30s-early 40s, so you can still be a top body builder at an older age.

Maybe. Although you also have to take into account that becoming a world class track and field athlete is incredibly mind numbingly boring in terms of the effort and discipline it requires so when athletes actually make it to the top of the tree they probably stop training as hard to enjoy the fruits of their labour.

For instance, Bolt was known to be a party animal. Had he continued to devote himself to pushing himself further he would almost certainly have broken his own world records later in his twenties. As it was he started coasting on natural talent after he became famous

You might be right. And he actually ran it in 9.81 in 2016 when he was 30. Which isn't far off his best of 9.59

Mostly 16 to 24

Good thread

The key takeaway for young users should be to start playing sports or gymmaxx / calisthenics if they arent already

Building up the phyisical foundation for serious sports takes years and you really dont have that much time to spare if you want to experience your peak

True. Mike Tyson had already become heavy weight champion at 23

eSports players peak even younger due to the reaction times needed. Female gymnastics is the harshest sport in terms of peak age though.

What age do reaction times peak?

strenght peaks at 35-40
athleticism declines after 28 but it's only that 1 second that separates a world class athlete from a generic elite one
