So about at what point would simple palate expansion not be enough to change the face significantly?
At that point, MSE would have to be the option correct?

I'll be trying palate expansion, i'll post if I ever get significant results.

Well my ortho said he got it fairly late, post-puberty, and got a wider mouth as a result (didn't tell me the exact age though).

I guess it would depend on the person.

My face has hardly changed at all within the past two years so I'm hoping its not too late for palate expansion.

I don't think it's ever too late for palatal expansion, but it does get harder as you age.

You can definitely still get adult slow palatal expansion well into your twenties (Mike Mew has even had older patients).

HOWEVER, there’s no definitive answer as to how much of that expansion will be truly bone based, or just tooth based. In all honesty, once you’re past the age of around 13, if you can afford MSE, get it. If you can’t, then save up and in the mean time try to get more traditional palatal expansion done (you can still possibly get bone based results, especially if you’re closer to 13 than 23).
It would be odd however, for you to be able to afford traditional palatal expansion + braces and not MSE.

@DianabolDownie how old are you?

as long as your suture breaks, after that point you are a child again (until it ossifies again)

so you could install normal RPE and expand so hard until suture breaks

might work
