I would guess that something close to a chicken evolution-wise laid the egg that then became a chicken.

The answer is the egg. At some point in evolution, members of whatever the direct ancestor species to the chicken was laid eggs that had some mutation(s) which made the children no longer able to mate with members of the parent species. From those eggs hatched the first chickens.
