starvation, hunger and malnutrition can stunt a woman’s growth and prevent her womb from growing fully. this will cause children to be born with very low birth weights (predicators of adult height)

so even if you yourself didn’t grow up in hunger, you can still end up shorter than your peers if your mother grew up in hunger or was malnourished

starvation isnt just a temporary thing, it’s a deeper generational problem that effects epigenetics and overall genetic fitness of a population
