What determines width (how wide) the base of the hand (palm) is?

So I have long fingers but a short square palm as a result I have a bellow average hand in terms of length and thickness. I see some people with wide palms but still not ogre looking hands is this the result of longer bones in the palm? Or thickness of the bones? Or something else?
