I feel like the ending was absolutely amazing. counting both EoE/25,26. I like the parallels in End Of Evangelion, and the symbolism, such as the Freudian Theory being referenced in episode 25, and 26. Specifically the Psychosexual development (which is the reason for the naming of episode 20 which was the first stage "Oral", with 5 stages in total and conveniently 5 episodes including episode 20 until the finale) The Freudian Psychosexual development theory also (sort of) states that if parts or conflicts are unresolved during psychosexual development, it would lead to problems throughout adolescence. that symbolically represented the End Of Evangelion, episode 24 (if other episodes weren't clear enough) was a representation of the 5th stage of psychosexual development, (genital) which is the state of mature relationships and exploring sexuality, which was exactly what Shinji was doing in episode 24 with kaworu. But obviously that was messed up because Shinji had to kill kaworu which you COULD see as a interference with the 5th stage of psychosexual development. The End of Evangelion also represents the consequences of his trauma, choosing to end his world and the lives in it (technically not ending, just combining) through human instrumentality because he succumbed to his own despair. (Kaworus death, Asuka hospital scene which def impacted his psyche, and Rei) there is still more symbolism, such as the spear of Longinus being puncturing Eva 01 being seen as the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and the third impact as a whole being able to be seen as the coming of Christ. Aside from EoE, episodes 25/26 are still magnificently well written despite the backlash. The scene of where Shinji was sitting on a chair, where asuka was sitting on a chair, where rei was sitting on the chair, and where Misato was sitting on the chair all had a deeper symbolic meaning than just the surface leveled information provided. the planets they sit down on have a symbolic meaning as a representation of their character. Rei sits on the moon, which there are many ties to the moon and her, and it is very obviously shown and connected. Shinji sits on the desolated world, Asuka sits on the sun, and Misato sits on Saturn. each of these reflect their personalities and such. one other thing about the Freudian Theories is the personality theory. Each of the 3 seem to represent one of the personalities in the Freudian Triad, Id, Superego, and Ego.
Asuka is Id
Shinji is Ego
Rei is Superego
Each of them seem distinct in their own way for a reason. I also like the other references they put in there and one parallel i remember being asuka being strangled being the parallel to asuka kissing Shinji. I thought that the tree of sephiroth reference was pretty cool like the the general zapped an angel reference and the At Eternity's Gate reference to the Shinji chair scene. Oh and also another reference to a philosophical theory (extestentialism) when Shinji rejects instrumentality.
Overall the ending to evangelion is very well written with lots of symbolism which i had a fun time "studying" or looking through
