I dont think they do it for women per se (although it probably started that way), but they do it for validation, which is mostly from men acknowledging they're a big guy or whatnot.

Also doing it for "confidence" is also pretty much the same as doing it for validation since thats where the confidence comes from. Although the said validation could come in different ways.

Same reason why women wear makeup even when meeting up with female only friends so they can feel validated by being prettier or "mogging" the other women
