Basically in the US they have an ultimate court with 9 judges who get to have the final say on quite a few controversial issues.
Any one judge who has a seat on the supreme court has a lifelong position until they either retire or die.
The sitting president is the one who decides (more or less) who will take up the empty seat should one become available.
A judge who was seated by a Democratic president just died, and will now probably be replaced by one nominated by Trump.
If this occurs the Republican nominated judges will outnumber the Democratic nominated judges 6-3.
Trump's nominations are seen as particularly problematic by Democrats because he picks fairly young people (around 40 years of age) which maximizes how much time they will remain in their seats.
