No, but they kill them with torture. They believe adrenaline gives the meat more flavor. If a dog dies when it's got a big surge of adrenaline it's suppost to give it the best potency (elegant taste and warmth giving properties, especially good for the winter). A lot of times they'll go at the dogs with a blowtorch and gouge out it's eyes before bashing it's head in. They'll also hold them down with tongs in boiling hot water before doing them in.

One of the dogs (a yellow lab) I took care of at the kennel, Baozi, met that exact end. We had just moved our location to my father in law's back yard. 21 dogs were already too many and Baozi, my brother in law's dog was always fighting with another dog. He was causing too much trouble. We decided to let Baozi stay on another relative's pig farm just down the road. Baozi had a pretty good life at the end. There was only one other dog on the property, and he got to eat all the meat he wanted. Plenty of space to explore and exercise. Unfortunately though he got out one day for only about 30 minutes. Relatives searched high and low but he dissapeared without a trace. Black dog meat peddlers from different areas had been seen in the village every day that week, driving their vans around looking to snatch up any dog they see. They'll grab them with tongs and throw them in their vans, or throw them tainted meat that will make them pass out immediately. Most families in villages like that have had dogs go that way. Poor Baozi got it bad in the end. This is life in China. It's accepted. 真没办法。

It doesn't matter where you go in China. Big cities or small ones, North or South. Every Winter you're gonna notice signs with 狗肉 (dog meat) subtly popping up at hole in the wall restaurants throughout any city.

Anyways, it's not just China. Cambodia and Vietnam have the same practices/beliefs about torture and dog meat.

One good aspect of growing up in a society where this kind of brutality is accepted as a fact of life is you don't have a bunch of people running around with f*cked up priorities. It's very clear what's important and what's not. I couldn't be married to a woman who devoted mental/emotional energy to animals.
