Psychosis is a collection of symptoms that affect the mind and cause a loss of contact with reality. Symptoms include:
Delusions
False beliefs that the person is so convinced of that no amount of logic can change their mind. For example, they might believe the police are watching them.
Hallucinations
Seeing, hearing, feeling, smelling, or tasting something that isn't there. For example, they might hear voices that no one else can hear.
Confused thinking
Thoughts may be muddled or confused, and the person may have difficulty concentrating or remembering things.
Changed feelings
The person may feel strange, cut off from the world, or have mood swings. They may also feel unusually excited or depressed.
Changed behavior
The person may behave differently from how they usually do. For example, they may be extremely active or lethargic, or laugh inappropriately.
Other symptoms
Suspiciousness, paranoid ideas, withdrawing socially, decline in self-care, emotional disruption, anxiety, lack of motivation, and difficulty functioning overall.
