critical thinking is the process of analysing, evaluating and synthesising information to form a reasoned judgment

rather than accepting information at face value, it requires questioning assumptions, identifying biases, and using evidence to solve problems

to think critically, you typically engage in a progression of mental steps:

  • analysis: breaking down complex information to see how its parts connect to the whole
  • evaluation: assessing the reliability, accuracy, and relevance of evidence and arguments
  • inference: drawing logical conclusions based on data rather than emotion or hearsay
  • self-regulation: being aware of your own personal biases and continuously questioning your own thought processes
why is critical thinking important?

  • better decision making: weighs options, assesses consequences, and tests assumptions before acting, resulting in choices
  • identifying misinformation: helps you scrutinise sources and separate fact from fiction in a world saturated with biased or fake content
  • uncovering biases: fosters self-reflection, enabling you to recognise and overcome your own preconceptions
  • enhanced creativity: encourages looking at challenges from multiple angles, leading to innovative, out-of-the-box solutions
