Media isn't telling the full story but basically America been fucking with Ukraine for many years, Obama removed the previous democratic government and put in this puppet government instead now led by this actor guy zelensky who came from nowhere, and started funding the neonazi groups to cause trouble on the border (similar to funding ISIS). Russia said for a long time they won't allow Ukraine to join NATO, and the ethnic russians in east Ukraine are being persecuted (for example they cut the river water supply to Crimea) and nazis are causing trouble for Russians in 2 other eastern regions DPR and LPR. Basically America was provoking Russia for a very long time and destroying Ukraine with corruption and money laundering (Burisma etc), Putin had enough, the west refused to negotiate with him, now there's war and Americans are hiding which goes to show how empty their promises were to Ukraine.

The western media propaganda is really strange, like they call Ukraine democratic and Putin a dictator. Putin is democratically elected and has the highest favorability rating in europe, by far, I think even higher than Orban. The Ukraine guy Zelensky was put in office in a violent coup, he is a dictator. Don't listen to western media, a good source for news is The Duran on youtube, very knowledgable on the region.
