What is "oneitis" and why do guys get it ?

How do niggas get oneitises spanning multiple years -- do people just project a personality onto a pretty girl and become obsessed and if so how does that even happen?
It seems like a uncontrollable behavior that only harms guy's lives.

If anyone has theories about how oneitis works then post them because I've never understood it despite years of hearing about this shit
