The midface will look long and flat, but I do admit that's kind of vague and subjective. Some more concrete, objective methods you can use are:

• Check the midface ratio. I'd say under something like 0.95 you could start calling it serious recession. (best method)
• Check for scleral show. It indicates poor eye support from the maxilla/cheekbones. (reliable)
• Check FWHR/cheekbones protrusion, FWHR < 1.8 (sign of maxilla recession but it's not as sure fire)
• Check if you have problems breathing through your nose, or if you have a tendency to mouth breathe (could just be a stuffy nose)
