Could batteries replace the combustion engine?

With current technology EV’s (electric vehicles) can definitely replace the short 5-20 mile trips people make (the most frequent type of trip with a car).

But how could an electric vehicle replace an 18 wheeler? Breakthroughs in this industry are big bucks, imagine how rich you could be if you monopolised a revolutionary form of energy conversion.
