What is the general consensus on the age gap between couples in the city you're living in?

I am born and raised in an Asian city. The average couple's age gap here is 6-10 years where the man is almost always older than the woman. Having a girlfriend older than you is considered weird, and for a reason men here value youth higher than personality. Younger men and older women couples are ridiculed for their ages in this culture.

For example, my father's friend is a rich Chinese entrepreneur. He has a half-Asian half-American wife 25 years younger than him. They got married a few years ago when he was 45 and the girl was 20. What makes it even funnier is his American father-in-law (her father) is only 4 years older than him. Their friends and family congratulated him on his marriage, and said that he was one lucky man.

20 years gap happen if you are a rich man, and men and women congratulate you. An attractive hapa girl that is 20 can marry a 40+ year old businessman.

It seems to me that the stereotypical Asian attitude toward age gap between couples must be different from the Western one? Am I right?

Yeah nobody cares in here as long one of the partners isn't too young like an 18-year-old dating a 30-year-old people will think it's weird. But I couldn't care less.

Most definitely it is different. Here in the united states even a 10 year age gap is seen as creepy, especially if the woman is 20 and the man is 30. However, almost every relationship is a woman with a man anywhere from 1-6 or 7 years older. There are some men with women older than them but it is very rare and also socially not super acceptable. It is also exceptionally rare for a woman, at least in an urban place, to get married at 20. Usually they dont get married until their mid 20s at the earliest. And almost everyone older than 30, man or woman, has been divorced at least once.

Well, if there was a woman at 30 and a man at 40, it wouldnt be seen as too creepy. But when the woman is young it is definitely seen as creepy. People will say that the man is into girls that are too young for him, he’s a predator, and shit like that. Men like women who look young of course, but the culture seems to be shifting where a young woman with an older man is seen as a situation where the woman is being taken advantage of. I dont think men really care, but women will definitely say its creepy if a woman is with a man more than 10 years older than him. Of course, if the man was a chad, it wouldnt matter, but for everyone else it is pretty strange to be seen with a much younger woman.
