But I am confused as to what size/weight to buy. What would be the ideal weight for a bone smashing hammer?

Material and shape of your bone smashing tool depends on which bone you want to augment.
For example I need a small hard object to smash my supraorbitals (hooding smashing)

By the way always remember to keep your head still, e.g. leaning onto a cushion or a wall while you smash. This way you will not cause brain contusion
