What is the psychology behind pathological lying?

There’s nothing that I despise more then someone who just lies and lies with no rhyme or reason, just for the sake of lying. I make sure to stay cautious of these kind of people, I never believe a word they say even if they’re telling me about mundane, everyday things.

Usually they make up bizarre stories or they add false information to something that is partially true, I pick up on it immediately but for whatever reason most people believe what they’re saying.

I lie all the time. Mostly for social status gain and to make myself and life seem more interesting than it is, it's super easy to make up events or stories about yourself and too etch it around people's interests.

Nah it is. I’m talking about lying to brag or to get out of trouble. I’m talking about consistently lying about random things, could be making up a story that doesn’t even involve them, making something up about a historical event ETC. Something completely random, they feel the need to lie just to lie.

I've known a handful of them in my life. Most of them do it because they are impulsive and want to gain social acceptance by the quickest means necessary. Of course, it always backfires unless said liar manages to be tactful and self aware about his lies, then he just becomes a humble bullshitter.

If you have a relatively boring life, this can make you look more interesting in the eyes of other people, like you are actually going around and doing stuff, I used to do this in my PUA phase, I had a bunch of funny/interesting stories, anecdotes and comments about every day things in my routine collection, some improvised by me, others found online, or in books, movies, comedy shows, etc.
