Good question, i have also wondered this. It's a complex topic, so we have to include several other questions, such as "Why was West Africa never conquered by the Arabs?" and "Why were the European invaders never able to settle and colonise West Africa like they did in the South?"
My simple answer is that you will see a mixing in West Africa, but it will be more localised. Before (even up to 50 years ago) there were tribes still in effect, that wouldn't even mix with each other in a 50 mile radius. Now that is removed, you will see a mix across the tribes, and a cultural blending further towards the Western (Europe) standard.
Which is good for standard of living (in the short term) but the effect of mixing to such a degree are not fully understood yet. Tribes existed for thousands of years for a reason.
