every light switch/plug in your house comes out of one of these set inside the wall
you wrap the wires around those rusted screws in there and the screws go into the contacts on the switch/plug
the things coming out of the top/bottom are conduits that contain the wires

Obviously it is an electrical box. More specifically, I am not 100% sure, but it looks like it was a receptacle. The combination of the insulated white common wire and that type of flex metal shielding lead me to believe it is from 1965 to 1980. The exterior plate on it probably looked like this. It should sell for $1,500-$3,000 at auction.
