The MBTI was developed as a psychometric tool by two bored housewives.

The most common criticism against it is that it gives inconsistent or varying results and claims baseline personality traits are supposed the same, unlike its "scientific model", which is the Big 5, virtually the same as MBTI traits - neuroticism, openness to experience (intuitive or sensor), extroversion, conscientiousness (judging/perceiving), agreeableness (thinker or feeler) traits are relatively stable but can fluctuate somewhat and gives a more slider scale type of type letters in which if you are in the middle of introversion or extroversion, say, your type of 4 letters can change easily.

But that's not all that it was supposed to be, it was created on Carl Jung's theory of cognitive functions, aka ways of process of analyzing/thinking/tendencies/ways to perceive the world by them down into "functions".

And it has a particular syntax and on different orders of functions, you get another 4 letter type code - the MBTI theory commonly considered is the 4 letter oversimplified version of this theory.

now the cognitive functions should be open to critiquing their validity but it should be known what the theory is actually supposed to be.

Regardless of not being accepted as a scientific psychometric, I found it to be a useful and dare I say fun? Tool - to add perspective into categorising individuals' personalities, motives, thinking patterns and the type labels actually tend to be somewhat accurate. Nevertheless it is just an idea and has its limitations and shouldn't be taken all that seriously, unfortunately it has devolved into pop psychology for foid entertainment and ego wanking with fancy labels.
