What size of permanent retainer is OK to keep on?

Title. I hear some mention having one on front 4 teeth on top and bottom 6 teeth on bottom is OK. Is that true? Or is it 4 for both?

The less teeth they cover the better. I remember a Mike Mew video where he says he recommends no retainer but if you do get one then get a permanent only on the top teeth.
