I don't live on campus. Also the only choices I've seen so far for friends are either nerdy Asian kids, or jocks . I don't fit in anywhere tbh ngl.

I just found some nice shaded spot under a tree near the gym to sit. I'll go inside in a little bit

Are you guys autistic, the gaps between courses are a blessing, that's the best time to bond with your colleagues, invite them to spend some time together in a bar, restaurant, or even chill in a park on a bench, that's how I got in a social circle back when I was in college, there were lots of gaps between classes so we started to go to bars, restaurants, parks, malls, cinemas, etc. or relax in the nearby dorm with the people who lived there...

Well, since college just started you still have time to meet and befriend your classmates. Ideally would be to live in a dorm too, you will have much more opportunities - everyone there is from other places, so they don't have their social circles and it's much more easy to befriend them and join a newly formed social circle...
Cold approaching people who live in the campus is autistic if you don't live there too, I befriended people from my class who lived in the dorm, then I started to spend time with them there and met other persons.

Joining other social circles is kinda difficult after they are already formed in a class, I've seen it happen but usually with persons who are very open, friendly, talkative, NT, and already had plenty of other friends. You could try talking to them, see how they react, stay around them, invite them to various activities, etc.
