I left a single rose on her car on Valentine’s Day. I knew she wasn’t seeing anyone and thought she might think it was me. I got up at 5 am, wore clothes that I never wear in public and made me look different, changed my gait, and walked on backroads without street lights so less cameras could see me. I bought a dozen roses in hopes that she’d think it was me, get enamored by it, and then I could give her the whole dozen. I was basically hoping she would accuse me of stalking (this wouldn’t legally be stalking, however, I’m in law school and should know) and I could say something like “you really think I bought you a single rose and put it on your car? No. I actually bought an entire dozen.” I still have them. In the days and weeks after Valentine’s Day, in my schizophrenia I also added the line “and they’ve been rotting, just like my heart has been in my chest.” Nothing ever came of it, though I did get to make her sad a few weeks ago because I revealed to her that I was the reason she wasn’t invited to a mutual friend’s wedding. Knowing that I was able to hurt her made it less painful to know that she doesn’t love me.
