Why does life feel so meaningless sometimes?

Sometimes life feels so unbearably meaningless and pointless out of nowhere. I could be having fun and all of a sudden my will to live drops. I've always felt this way even as a kid, and whenever I feel it, I just get depressed. Is there anything I can do about this? Is there a reason for this?
