I've been seeing this one around lately, interested to know what you all think.

You find yourself in a room with two buttons, one blue, one red. You are presented with some information.
  1. Every single person on Earth takes a private vote by pressing either a red button or a blue button.
  2. If more than 50% of the population presses the blue button, everyone survives with no penalty.
  3. If 50% or fewer press the blue button, only the people who pressed the red button survive, and everyone who pressed blue dies.
  4. Everyone knows all of the rules.
  5. Nobody can communicate.
What do you do? Do you press the blue button? Do you press the Red?

I would pick the red button. There is no need to take an invisible moral high ground. If everyone were to band together to press blue, sure, that would be cool. Why not just band together and press red? There is zero risk involved if everyone picks red. To put it simply, you MIGHT die, or you WILL survive.

However, a point my sister brought up was that not all those choosing red will be selfish, but all selfish will choose red. What people will that leave us with in society? I refuted that with most intelligent people naturally tend to act in their own self interest in situations like this with a dominant survival-prioritising strategy. Additionally, there is just no need to push the blue button to "save those who press it", as that is just natural selection in action - at least how I see it.

A few other points were discussed and tangents made about the issues society faces with supporting those less able, and if they should be supported or not. Thought provoking.

Neither is a bad moral choice because if you pick blue you're somewhat retarded and trusting indians and the third world to press blue. And if you pick red will 100% survive. You were forced into this situation why should you virtue signal

Exactly what i'm saying. The intelligent choice is to pick red. Society should not stick their necks out to such an extent for those less competent.

Yup, it's the phrasing that gets you thats why i added colours

Your sister made a horrible point. If you choose blue because the selfish people are pressing red it still would have no effect. You still have a chance to die

id be helping contribute to natural selection by pressing red so i pick red. If everyone picks red then no one dies. If someone picks blue then it means they were too retarded to understand this. Plus red is guaranteed survival.
