No worries, if you’re new to it all, you won’t understand what it means.

So, basically: you have, if you are a male, two haplogroups; one paternal haplogroup and one maternal haplogroup. Females only carry a maternal haplogroup. This is because they only have the X chromosome, whereas men have both an X and Y chromosome.

A man inherits his paternal haplogroup from his father, which goes back thousands of years, and he also inherits his maternal haplogroup from his mother, which goes even further back since mutations occur more often on the Y chromosome than it does on the X chromosome.

You can only discover your haplogroups if you take a DNA test (perhaps a blood test would work too, but I am unsure). Both of mine are indigenous to South Asia. Most South Asians, however, have a Central Asian paternal haplogroup and a South Asian maternal haplogroup, meaning their male ancestors came from the outside and mixed with the local women of South Asia.

R1a-Z93 is the most common haplogroup in South Asia. Haplogroups have different subclades as well. R1a-L657 is the South Asian marker, and R1a-Y7 (or Y6) is the Punjabi marker. I am not entirely sure which one of the two it was. Afghans, on the other hand, have the Iranic marker which is R1a-Z2125, even though it is part of R1a-Z93, it is a distinct branch that diversified among Indo-Iranians. Though sometimes, an Indo-Aryan will carry it as well. This is because they both descend from Proto-Indo-Iranians, which branded into Indo-Aryans and Indo-Iranians. Interesting stuff, huh?
