Europe out developed India in the 1800s because of the industrial revolution then eventually colonized it but why didn't India develop with them? As before it was more developed than entire europe

Idk Europe was pretty undeveloped before the industrial revolution due to a lack of outside trades however India traded with China for example. Safe to assume India was more developed then but may be wrong.
