They have a phenomenon called "favorite person". If you happen to appear during specific phase of their mood and there is no other "favorite person", you can get a lot of lovebombing out of sudden. It's stereotypically a chance to otherwise incels/ltns to get some. Plus, such people tend to mimic the fp, trying to share the the same interests and tastes, which may lead yesterday's longer to believe they actually found "the soulmate".
But actually, it's horrible mental disorder. They are drama queens who will make scenes out of literally nothing, as soon as the "love phase" ends.
The cycle is typically "lovebombing -> cooldown -> devaluation -> hatred" with rare moments of clarity. Psychologically, it's said they are afraid fp will abadon them (their worst fear) and so they start to distance themselves and "leave fp first so fp won't leave them", and it results in random cheating and heavy fights. Then the phase ends, regret begins, then lovebombing starts again, then distancing and devaluation again...
It's an emotional rollercoaster, but some people like it.
Bpds tend to choose certain kind of people - either narcissists or someone with the "savior syndrome", who will "take care of them".
Bpd often resort to stalking online and irl, and trying to sabotage new relationships of their ex.
If you think it's quirky, "wow nice, emotional unstable girl, she must be great in sex", think again but with your upper head this time.
Absolutely not LTR material.

Only mentally ill girl I've ever met is my mum

Everyone's mentally ill, but the majority embraces denial because they're fucking crazy. Looks like a man, I see a penis. "Muh it's a woman with a gender blooper."
