They can cause developmental problems but you should be fine if you do it in combination with some other things surgeries/procedures. They put unnatural pressure on your palate while growing and can cause problems because of that, even though they straighten your teeth. You can find better answers on other places online, this forum probably has some post about it with good info but who knows how to find it
