I am an example. Especially when you are a pressure fighter fighting from a high guard who needs to take more punishment to get inside. When you are blocking punches, you are pressing your gloves to your face, with each punch blocked making pressure to your face, or sometimes getting punched directly in the face or you can accidently clash your heads with your opponent which is very painful (bone on bone, imagine that) so your body will adapt to it. From those punches, pressure and so on there are micro breaks happening in your cheekbones, then they will heal, then break again, then heal and again and again, making your cheekbones, browridge and jaw bone much harder and bigger. Don’t imagine that like “breaking your cheekbone” lol. It’s a slow process and you don’t really feel that.
It’s the same with boxer’s nose. When I started boxing, one light jab to the nose and my nose would break and bleed. Then 2 years later in national championships final I got once caught to the nose with an overhand right and nothing. Yes, it’s not very enjoyable getting punched in the nose, but it’s ok, no blood, nothing. Sometimes it is swollen after the fight for a day or two but nothing bad. It’s the same principle. Your nose will get harder from boxing (and yes, little bit bigger, especially if your nose is big) thanks to those micro breaks and healing process afterwards. My opponent would have to break it to make it bleed and it is very hard to break my nose after those years. It’s become very solid.
