Wtf man. I wanted to buy a 1TB SSD and they are so inflated. Gen 5 barely in stock and Gen 4 and 3 are like being sold for 2x the markup. Even worse if you want something from a reputed brand like samsung, crucial or WD. Fucking hell.

I didn't know it was affecting the SSD market too. I know the GPUs and RAMs have been on perma shortage but Storage too now.

This is one of those indirect shortages. AI data centers eating up silicon wafers. NAND is actually is very cheap to manufacture. The shortage is artificial
You are right but calling the shortage artificial is simply just plain wrong and youโ€™re failing to see how memory makers operate
3D nand fab lines need fucking billions in captial and foundries only have a finite amount of silicon to use
Manufacturers are simply prioritising the big AI slop rather than us normies sadly

artificial in the sense that there isnt a sudden geological scarcity

but there is a very real multi-year lag on new capacity, as well as companies preferring to make more expensive chips

why as a factory would you produce consumer chips when you can produce special memory chips that big ai companies need for their data centers and are willing to buy them at a premium? its just the rational decision as a company who wants to profit

makes sense for the company but fuck them im glad i upgraded my pc before all of this

SSDs have always been expensive tbh
