When people ask me how I am doing, my most common answer is "average"

And sometimes the person asking the question replies "I'm sorry" or something equivalent. WTF? What is bad about being average? Maybe they are so used to people lying to them all the time that they think everyone walks around in a state of nirvana.

Normal people adjust their expectations in life based upon their previous experiences. A pragmatic person recognizes it is impossible to feel "great" all the time. If you feel great all the time then you are just engaging in self deception, and are possibly mentally ill.
