AGI means Artificial General Intelligence. It refers to a type of Al that can understand, learn, and apply knowledge across a wide range of tasks. Exactly like a human Unlike current Al systems ( ChatGPT), which are specialized and limited to narrow domains. AGI would be able to reason, plan, learn from experience, and adapt to new situations across any field just like a super intelligent and hyper productive human

AGI will be able to

-Pass the Turing Test consistently (fool humans into thinking it's a human)

-Learn any subject with no prior programming

-Handle novel situations like a human would

-Transfer knowledge from one area to another (like using physics to solve a biology problem)

Why it is significant?

Once AGI is a reality it is game over for everyone even highly skilled workers ekth specialized skills wont be spared. It is going to cause mass unemployment. Imagine having to compete with 100 Einstein level humans that wont stop learning, will never get tired, won't complain and cannot be stopped. It is going cause a major job shift and disrupt every industry bar none. This would as big of an event as the invention of the wheel

i hope never, but i think it will surpass humans in a matter of time.
our best shot would be trying to keep up with it.

Even Altman said the same thing. Even if AGI hasn’t come yet. We need to treat it like it will

But it gives rise to an increase in jobs and markets that aren't AI dominated no? What would you say the meta would be to look into now which is guaranteed to have a drastic increase or profitability in about 10-30 years?

Every major tech revolution from the steam engine to the internet has followed the same pattern: disrupt existing industries, create entirely new markets, and shift where human labor holds value. AI is no different. According to exprerts in the field the next meta is going to be Al integration, biotech, climate tech

With the exponential growth of AI we are seeing. Its safe to say we will get to AGI between 2030 to 2035. And ASI will follow soon.

But AI isn't comparable to steam engine or internet. An AGI that is on the same level of intellegence as median human but exponentially more efficient could do everything that a human can. AGI would lead to mass unemployment we have never seen before.

Highly doubt AI is going to ever replicate human creativity or intuition in the way people view this. We’d require a huge breakthrough in neuroscience. The human brain is the most complex, fascinating system in the universe.

Yea. AGI is fundamentally different to steam engine and interneg. It should be able to do most white collar jobs better, faster and for free. If it ever hits human level thinking but scales infinitely it's straight up replacement. That's why it is really hard to predict how it'll play out it's like releasing a new species into the economy

AI progress feels exponential now, but that doesn't guarantee AGI by 2030. This is core of gary Markus argument. A lot of what we're seeing is scaling existing models, not actual breakthroughs in reasoning or understanding. Without solving core issues like hallucination, lack of common sense, or the 'stochastic parrot' problem we're just making fancier parrots not true thinkers. Unless there's a major architectural shift, that growth curve is gonna hit a wall as Gary predicted.

That's how I feel mainly. I'm not sure if I could say that that AGI won't ever happen, but we need to have a lot more happen first in regards of science (and neuroscience) before it gets up to us.

LLMs are interesting and impressive only if you don't fully understand how they work. They're still impressive even if you do understand how they work, but it's dramatically less so. Most people know LLMs have been around for a long time, because the technology is not very new; it's just the big players with a lot of money got involved somewhat recently and so they come off as better than what they used to be. Google has been in the LLM game for a long time but didn't make it fully public it until OpenAI shared their ChatGPT, so it's not anything new. I think generative AI like image generation AIs also have been around for a long time, same with the music ones and voice ones.

Counting that this technology or concept is not actually new, it's just money is now being poured into it, it might seem more exciting than it actually is if it's your first introduction to it. However AI as it currently stands will need to be specialized; LLMs will focus on language, generative AI will focus on generating content, medical AI will focus on medicine; but what makes humans interesting is we're not 'designed' for any specific thing - think about how every 'type' of human has come together and built so many things and created so many things. I'm not sure AI could ever get to the point where one single AI could have the potential to do anything; I assume every new AI will have to be specialized and programmed for a specific purpose, and it would have to remain that way for a long time.
