i'm 54, every thought i had contrary to the mainstream consensus i had to cultivate on my own through observation, pattern recognition, and reading news articles and editorials. we didn't have internet and instant access to all sorts of information. we had to "trust the experts" and just assume the public school and media were not lying to us.
