I like Colorado but property is just too expensive. There's tons of empty land but most of it isn't buildable or is protected so housing is concentrated in a few areas, which keeps prices high.

Depends on what you value but I'd say for the average persons taste California is the best if you have the money. Great weather, every biome reachable in the same day, beautiful as fuck, most populous / relevant state and everything important happens there.
