Gym mogs if you’re a mogger, callisthenic if you’re an incel
The only calisthenics exercises worth programming are chin ups and dips, weighted. Training in a gym with free weights and machines is the most efficient way to gain the amount of muscle required to get the physique you want, you just have to lift and diet in accordance with your goals. The people on this forum who think calisthenics have some sort of special powers which develop a different kind of muscle or a more aesthetic physique than proper lifting are genuinely retarded.
Calisthenics are definitely very effective don’t get me wrong, if you genuinely prefer them to the point where you’ll be much more consistent and more inclined to train hard than if you went to the gym, you’ll likely get better results with proper calisthenics training than half assed gym training. But proper lifting is more effective just because you can load each movement better, from a hypertrophy training perspective. Doing a converging chest press or fly, some sort of cable tricep pushdown, and some sort of lateral raise, is a more effective way to train and grow the chest shoulders and triceps than calisthenics movements. Not to say calisthenics don’t work, they do, just not quite as well.No one is saying that.
Callisthenics can get you up to well beyond a 2 plate bench though, for example, just by home workouts - even if the rep ranges are a bit stupidly high. Worked for me and that’s not even getting into weighted callisthenics or advanced push up variations like archer - just the simple regular ones.
I don’t see why you wouldn’t work your way up to that before going in a gym. You don’t have to spend a year being embarrassed and mogged and you get to save a year of membership money.
Once you ran out of scope for gains in callisthenics, THEN you go gym. Weight is weight - only limitation of callisthenics is eventually your body weight is too easy but it will not happen instantly. If you’ve never trained before it could take a year or two even.

Calisthenics people have much better faces and develop better posture compared to gym.
