Which would you rather have?

Would you rather be fluent in 5 languages… or be an expert in any 1 programming language?

  • I want 5 human languages (English being 1)

  • I want 1 programming language (and English)

Be fluent in 5 languages (English must be 1)

Or know extremely proficient at 1 programming language and just English.

By fluent I mean speak, read, and write.

By extremely proficient I mean you can pretty much code any feasible one man project and work collectively as a team as well.

Dude are you high?

I’ve thought about this and I agree. Knowing every single English word would be mogger.

Knowing English, Spanish, French, Mandarin, and Hindi allows you to communicate with over 3 billion people, almost 4 billion if you assume that everyone is monolingual. That's half of the world's population.

With the ability to bypass all the raw talent and effort required to learn and maintain proficiency in those languages, you'd wonder why you'd prefer to choose the second option.

Keep coping, but being able to communicate well gets you very far in life. Being able to do so in the top 5 languages by number of speakers multiplies your outreach.

LMFAO. This. How far have your English connections got you in life? What makes you think Indians and Chinese people will help you further. The only use to this wear more so on reading documents and getting a job as a translator.

Yeah it’s a case of the grass is greener. All that will happen is you’ll get insulted in different languages and rejected lmfaoooo. Unless you’re rich and muscular.

No need in trying to use whatever anecdotes I possess to debunk a theoretical hypothesis I proposed. I could ask that very same question to you, and it'd still go to nowhere.

Also it would be amusing if you're rice, walk into a Senegalese grocery store, and start casually talking in Wolof

You forgot being goodlooking too.

How is that better than being able to program your own shit and modify apps?

It's not even practical that's the thing. I mean, you plan on living your life in 10 different languages? doesn't even make sense. Just dominate the single most important language + speak your own and shut the fuck up.

I’m bilingual and you pretty much just stick with the one you learned first.

programming language so that i can use it to earn money to look max

win-win baby

If you fluently spoke the five most commonly spoken languages in the world (which English is one of), you could probably get some insane job as a diplomat.

I didn't lay out my reasoning based on practicality. I chose the first option because of the rarity (cool) factor it holds.

Yeah, I've realized you're probably right, and I concede to parts of your arguments. But I'm young, and my ideas are still in formation and are very malleable. Posting on here essentially becomes a mental exercise, if anything.

Are you a nuanced thinker, or do you see things in a one-sided fashion?
