This would be from a French perspective in the later stages of the battle, autumn 1916

British perspective is more interesting imo
I saw a documentary from the British perspective on the first day on the Somme. 20,000 dead, 60,000 casualties. And the attack force was only 120,000. 50% casualty rate, most in the first couple hours, minutes even

WW1 was the most useless waste of human life because of trench warfare. Thousands of people dieing and staying out for months just for a few meters of mud.

I think it was one of the most psychologically brutal wars in human history.
Imagine sitting in a trench for weeks and then being shot within minutes or even seconds of exiting it.

Not to mention that if you did manage to make it to the other side, you’d have to engage in hand to hand combat with the enemy.

Or imagine being a German soldier on the Somme in 1916 and seeing a fucking tank rolling toward you… actually terrifying.

Ww2 had more causalitied but the death was quick and wasn't so traumatizing as like WW1. The term shell shocked was invented in ww1

Ur right. I believe the first case of shell shock came from a British soldier in late 1914/early 1915.
He had been trapped and entangled in barbed wire in no mans land for several hours, I think 48.
The constant shellfire had left him temporarily deaf I believe, and the psychological impacts were extreme.

Which one was it when they implemented bombs underneath the opponent’s bases? It took place on a hill
