I have an ethnic friend. His parents want him to pursue an extremely well-paying white-collar job, but he just isn’t cut out for it. He has several mental health issues that affect his ability to focus for long periods of time, his intelligence isn’t particularly high, and on top of that, he struggles with loneliness, which only adds to the distraction. I don’t think he’s going to be able to live up to his parents’ expectations, and he’ll likely be miserable just trying to. People often praise ethnic parents as ideal examples of how to raise children, but I disagree. They can be insensitive, robotic, soulless, and insufferable. White parents tend to be more involved in their children’s lives beyond just academics, helping them work through internal struggles and often being more open to alternative paths like trades or less demanding careers.
