i still do, and some of my acquaintances from the same generation do as well, but it's becoming increasingly rare. this wasn't just a trained tv/movie affectation, or if it was, it influenced the way people spoke. you'll notice wymxn used to sound older and they specifically spoke in a way that made them sound older. "skully" from x files had the same speaking pattern.
people spoke in complete sentences with proper enunciation and there was no degenerate pidgin english full of ebonics and slang. this comes from being immersed among your own and having very limited real world encounters with non whites, for that to have an effect, you'd need constant unremitting exposure. for example, mtv, vh1, various hip urban media after school, and forced nigger interaction during.
