I'll keep my suggestions strictly to the point. Hope you find your answers here:
1) You may speak to men you know well anytime and anywhere.
2) No smooching or physical display of affection outside very private confines.
3) Avoid talking to people you do not know when you walk the streets or are in public places like bus stops, railway stations, airports, tourist places or whatever. If you need to speak to somebody like a hawker, shopkeeper, guide or anybody else, keep it to the minimum and do not smile excessively.
4) Do not smile at people you do not know. Do not return a smile from an unknown person. Ignore catcalls, whistles or any lewd behavior that is not physically intimidating and that does not specifically target you.
5) Its better not to wear clothes that reveal.
6) Do not go alone to isolated places, outskirts and unknown places.
7) If you need to hire a cab or an 'auto', plan in advance, make sure your friends know where you are going and use reliable ones.
8) Don't reprimand people for any type of un-civic behavior like spitting, peeing in public or whatever. Look away from them and walk away if it disgusts you.
9) If you use crowded public transport, you cannot avoid people coming too close to you, but otherwise do not let anybody come too close to you. Do not let anybody touch you in unknown situations, whether it is a beggar pleading for money or a driver giving you a hand. Pull away.
10) Keep you personal belongings and valuables on you all the time.
11) Go around in broad daylight and stick to well lit places where people abound.
A lot of these suggestions, as you would realize, apply almost to any place you are not familiar with. If you follow them, you can be assured to be safe. India is remarkably safe in many aspects. You would almost never get mugged, see a gunfight or get kidnapped for ransom.
