Perhaps, but Europe wasn't any kind of meritocracy back then. Nobleman was noble, because his grandfather 300 years ago was really good with a sword.
Wealthy traders were wealthy traders because their great grandfather 300 years ago set up a shop in a growing town.
Peasant was a peasant because his father was, and his father before him, and there was practically 0 upward mobility unless there was a war, army passed through your village to recruit and you'd prove yourself to be a exceptional swordsman, which was a pipedream for most, considering all your dreams could be shattered just because your army was led by some pampered brat and the opposite army was led by a harder man. Or maybe you'd spend years in a siege not seeing any action and you'd return to your peasant life soon after.
Being a reject back then meant absolutely nothing.
