This is called typecasting and is both a saving grace and a detriment depending on who you are and which roles you fit into.
Actors forced down a singular path are either very bad, more or less playing themselves or very thin characters, or they have such characteristic looks they generally only fit a certain role.

They usually design plots to utilize these actors to have a name attached to the movie that is recognizable. The rock does not make good movies but people know who he is, which gives the movie more recognition
