Not to be rude or arrogant, but I had more qualifications and experience than what the advert even asked for.

Who was this "other candidate"? A woman? A disabled person? A trans person? A WASP old money Chad with "connections"?

We have lots of qualified applicants and are oversubscribed but we have decided to go forward with another candidate instead of you because we felt that they were a better match for this position. My current contract will end this summer. ^ Just got this email back from a placement I wanted...

Other candidates were either better looking or more charismatic or you just got cucked by affirmative action or Chad with connections. Maybe you didn't seem enthusiastic enough and they just want someone easy to work with. The fact is there's so many reasons and at the end of the day none of them matter because it's all luck and it's a numbers game (unironically) when applying to lots of jobs. If you are targeting a specific job role at a certain firm then that's when you need to make sure everything is perfect to maximise your chance of success and that you know the job you are applying to. Maybe they want someone who is charming and excited for the job but still relaxed in general, or they want a chutney ferret who has wanted this job for years.
