Spanish= Religious zeal, and high stakes. They sent conquistadors across oceans toppled empires, and loaded ships with mountains of silver. Series of decisive victories but direct confrontations and no proxy warfare means their treasury ran out once they had a large enough empire and they couldn't control it.

English= Cunning efficiency and divide and rule using funded proxies. Never did grand battle schemes or decisive victories just small skirmishes that chipped away piece by piece and lots of loses but were protected because they were an island with the world's strongest navy and the the Bank of England. There's an old saying in Britain. The British lose every battle but the last.

British maintained a strict social divide between themselves and local populations while Spain practiced mestizaje which racial and cultural mixing. They also built permanent European style cities, universities, and cathedrals. They wanted to make the entire world like Spain.

While the British weren't interested in making the locals into English men they just wanted to exploit and do trade and the same blueprint was passed down as a hereditary trait to the United States when they got their independence they inherited the same Anglo American obsession with global commerce and scaled it to that world with the power of the US dollar.
