I keep seeing people hype nose jobs like they are an automatic glow up but nobody really talks about how they can mess with facial proportions especially the philtrum
When you reduce the nose tip or rotate it upward it changes how much space is visually left between the nose and the upper lip Even if the philtrum length does not physically change it can look longer because the nose no longer balances that area This is especially true if the original nose had some projection that broke up the midface
A longer looking philtrum is almost always a downgrade A short compact philtrum is associated with youth attractiveness and sexual dimorphism When the nose gets smaller and the philtrum suddenly looks stretched it can age the face and make the mouth area look weak or droopy This is why some people get a nose job and something feels off even if the nose itself looks fine
Another thing is that surgeons focus too much on the nose in isolation Faces do not work like that Everything is about ratios The nose tip to upper lip relationship is huge If you shorten the nose without compensating anywhere else you shift attention straight to the philtrum and upper lip If those are not strong features you just exposed a flaw that was previously hidden
This is why some people come out of rhinoplasty looking more uncanny or less attractive overall They technically fixed one feature but ruined the harmony A big nose can actually help mask a longer philtrum while a small nose can exaggerate it
Moral of the story is that nose jobs are not universally good If you already have an average or long philtrum you should be very careful because making your nose smaller or more upturned can make your midface look longer and your overall looks worse Facial harmony matters more than checking boxes on individual features.

This is a good thread although it’s more for people with philtrums of at least 15 mm or so and already medium or high nasolabial angles.

I have the opposite problem, 12-13 mm philtrum and low nasolabial angle from my bulbous tip hanging over it. This makes my lower third look short and weak in comparison. So for me there’s no other way around a rhinoplasty.

Yeah a big droopy nose might hide the philtrum from some angles but if you have a long philtrum, it is still visible from many other angles and irl, I mean you still have both the nose failo and the philtrum failo. If you fix the nose failo, then you are only left with the philtrum failo, which if it's bad enough, you can get a lip lift for. It's true that aggressive rotation and deprojection might make the philtrum appear a bit longer but the difference isn't really significant and is negligible in majority of cases. Also after the surgery the philtrum looks longer for many months due to swelling
